The are some upcoming new standards for sodium (Na) battery shipments. A notable introduction this time will be the addition of UN Numbers for Sodium ion batteries (UN3551); Sodium ion batteries contained in/packed with equipment (UN3552) and vehicles powered by sodium ion batteries (UN3558).

With regard to these changes, IG Air Cargo Switzerland organized a webinar on 1 October 2024 with representatives of all stakeholders from our community, during which the Regional Cargo Manager of IATA, Juan Fernandez, provided us with valuable information on this emerging energy storage technology and its implications for cargo shipping, particularly as a new type of Dangerous Goods.
